RENDERFEED ARTIST PROFILE – MARK GMEHLING

Renderfeed: Tell me a little bit about yourself and about your life as a designer in Dortmund.

(Mark) 50% of my daily business is commercial illustration and animation. 2 days a week I’m teaching graphic design and digital illustration; the rest of the week I am working on my personal projects.

Being a designer in Dortmund is nothing special. 99% of my jobs are handled via email, so I could sit everywhere on this planet as long as I have a stable web connection. In fact Dortmund with its 580,000 citizens is a quite small city, but I enjoy life and the people here. I can afford a studio, which I couldn’t afford if I was based in London or New York. Next to that I’m still with my old school friends here.

Renderfeed: Your digital work is very unique, crazy funny and colorful, with textures that resemble translucent porcelain or shiny plastic. How did you develop such a personal style?

(Mark) I don’t think it was a combination of conscious decisions, but coming from a graffiti background where everyone was painting letters back in the days you were always fighting for attention, you wanted your letters to be recognized, you needed to develop a signature style. I always forced myself to not copy other people or walk on beaten tracks. So I tried to innovate and look different. When I look at my personal work nowadays I think it is a combination of characters and typography- trying to be dynamic and balanced at the same time.

RENDERFEED ARTIST PROFILE – MARC URTASUN

Renderfeed: Tell us a little bit about yourself and about your life as a designer in Barcelona!

(Marc) Hello everyone, my name is Marc Urtasun. First of all I would like to congratulate Renderfeed on their artist interviews; this is a great initiative!

I am 23 years old and I currently live and work in Barcelona, Spain. I just finished my college degree, but I’ve worked as a freelance designer for practically a year now. I am passionate about everything related to design and particularly about the 3D world, because of the infinite creative possibilities it offers.

What I like best about this job is that there is always something new to learn. I consider myself a very inquisitive and curious person who likes to explore and find new artistic references and artists to get inspired by.

Renderfeed: What type of work do you specialize in?

(Marc) I am currently focusing on motion graphics and 3D design. As mentioned I only recently started doing this professionally and I have been trying to balance my professional work with my college assignments.

Renderfeed: Did you attend any classes in college that helped prepare you to become the artist that you are today?

(Marc) I studied multimedia at CITM (Centro de la Imagen y la Tecnología Multimedia) in Barcelona, Spain. I tried to not miss any of my classes and lectures, but to be honest many of the things I learned aren’t really that useful for the work I do now. University simply shows you the tools and with any luck you find a good professor, but I think I learned much more at home, spending time in front of my computer.

Chat and Cinema 4D Quick Tips by EJ Hassenfratz from Eyedesyn.com

We sat down with Emmy award winning motion designer EJ Hassenfratz, a well-known member of the online Cinema 4D community who has extensive and varied experience in the motion graphics industry.

EJ runs his own freelance business, eyedesyn. In addition to being a Lynda.com Cinema 4D course author, he frequently works for MAXON, representing them at trade shows, user groups, and beta testing CINEMA 4D.

Renderfeed: EJ, how did you start out in motion graphics? Was this your childhood dream or did you decide to go into motion graphics later in life?

(EJ) Thanks for having me! My background in motion graphics is unique I’d say. I know a lot of designers who wanted to become a designer after being inspired by an artist or seeing some amazing graphics piece in a movie or on TV. My main inspiration to become a motion graphics artist was mainly through my dad and my uncle. Both are amazing graphic designers and art directors, so growing up my dad would take me to his work in the graphics department and I’d be sitting there messing around drawing on the Quantel Paintbox. I would draw a ton and never really got into Photoshop or After Effects until college, really. My dad gave me my first internship at his TV station he worked for and I just tried to soak up all the knowledge I could considering my major was in Fine Arts, I never learned After Effects or any 3D in college so I’m 100% self taught in motion graphics.

Renderfeed Artist Profile – Chaotic Atmospheres

Renderfeed: Tell me a little bit about yourself and about your life as a designer in Geneva!

(Istvan) I started my career as a graphic designer: After completing my college education, I joined college friends of mine who had started their own graphic design studio. I ended up working for them for five years. But after so much time working for someone else, I started to feel as if I was “dissolving” my own universe and style. I was deeply implicated in every project I was working on, but had no control over any of the projects because they were not really mine. So, one day, I decided to take a break, to go free-lance and to rediscover my own style. It’s strange, but I don’t even remember which specific event led me to this decision!

Right now I’d define myself as a digital artist rather than as a graphic designer, even if the work is similar. I work anywhere between twelve to fifteen hours per day on my computer. So my “working” life is closely related to my online life.

Outside of that, in Geneva, I’ve got my family, my friends, my “normal” life. My neighbors don’t know about my work (and nobody calls me “Istvan” because that’s not my real name).

Renderfeed: Your work is very unique. There is a strong influence of mathematics and poetry in it. Can you explain what inspired you to develop such a personal style?

Renderfeed: Tell us a bit about yourself and your work!

(Ben Watts) I’m a self-taught motion designer & 3d generalist from Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia. I’ve been using After Effects since 2007 and started out with 3d in 2009 using 3ds Max. For the last 7 years or so I’ve created hundreds of animations for music video’s, TV spots & promo video’s among others. Most recently I’ve been focusing on teaching motion design and VFX.

Renderfeed: When did you start working with C4D?

(Ben Watts) I’ve been using Cinema 4D since the middle of 2013.

Renderfeed: What do you like about Cinema4D as a 3D software package and why do you choose to work with it?

(Ben Watts) I love how easy it is to work with Cinema 4D. Around the middle of last year I was doing a lot of animation & rendering for Television and I needed software that enabled me to get these renders out to clients faster. Cinema 4D seemed like the perfect fit with its MoGraph toolset.

Renderfeed Artist Profile – Berd

Renderfeed: Tell me a little bit about yourself and about your life as a designer.

(Berd) Hello everyone, my name is Miquel, although I’m better known in the design community as “Berd”. I’m 25 years old and I’m from Barcelona in Spain. Currently I live in London.

I started out studying computer science in college, because I knew I wanted to work with computers. But soon I found that it wasn’t what I had expected and I changed to study design instead, all thanks to a designer friend of mine who was kind enough to show me what he was working on.

I came to London a few months ago and I am currently a freelance designer for Stinkdigital (http://www.stinkdigital.com/en/). Stinkdigital is an award-winning production agency with offices in New York, London and Paris. They specialize in interactive content, animations and web development for clients such as Google, Rayban, IBM and many others. Right now I am working on a 2D motion design for Rayban.

Renderfeed: How did Stinkdigital find and recruit you?

(Berd) They actually found my portfolio on the Internet and they liked what they saw. My profile was a good fit for the Rayban project.

Renderfeed: How did you come up with the artistic name “Berd”

(Berd) Berd is a combination of the English “bird” and “verd”, the word for the color green in my native language, Catalán. I like the bird metaphor: Birds never stay in the same place for long; they keep flying, a bit like me, moving from client to client, from project to project. And needless to say, green is my favorite color!

Renderfeed Artist Profile – Luca Viola

Renderfeed: Tell me a little bit about yourself and about your life as a designer in England.

(Luca) My name is Luca Viola. I am 28 years old and I am from a little town in the North of Italy, not too far from Genoa. I moved to the United Kingdom 7 years ago because I wanted to experience a different country and I always thought London was a wonderful city, especially for the creative arts. So that’s where I started my life abroad, working as a barista in various London coffee shops. Later I actually moved to Brighton as a result of landing a job as Junior Creative 3D Designer at creative agency Bolder Creative

Renderfeed: How did you find your passion for 3D design?

 (Luca) I always had a passion for illustration and design: First it was pencil on paper – ever since I was little I used to draw all the time. I was the only one in my family and none of my friends shared my passion, so every afternoon after school I was at home drawing. I used to draw comics. I remember my favorites were Spawn by Greg Capullo and Frank Miller’s Sin City. I used to draw them on big A3 paper and put them on the wall in my room.

A couple of years ago I moved from traditional to digital art and finally I found 3D to be my choice for illustrations.

 I love my actual life as a designer; it’s amazing how every day I can do what I like and work for such big clients.

Renderfeed studio profile – Vogner

Vogner is a creative studio with a passion for motion design. Using a variety of techniques, LA-based Vogner strives to bring the clients’ vision to life through live action, design and animation. We chatted to founders Graham and Patrick about their studio and asked them about their favorite projects!
Renderfeed: Patrick, Graham, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. Can you start out by telling us a little bit about yourselves? How long you have been working in the animation industry?

(Patrick) Thank you as well! Both Graham and myself come from a background in design ranging from print, footwear/product design and motion graphics. We both have had a focus in the Motion Graphics design industry for 10+ years.

Renderfeed: Let’s travel back to your childhood: Where did you go to school, and what classes did you study? What helped prepare you to become the artists that you are today?

(Patrick) From a young age I was always very interested in various forms of art. The first medium that really caught my interest was silk screening, which evolved into graphic arts to create intricate designs that could not have been printed otherwise. I attended Loyola Marymount University here in Los Angeles and graduated with a degree in graphic design. At school I was introduced to Motion Graphics and got my first internship at Buck design, which led to my first job there learning the ins and outs of the industry. After that I started freelancing around Los Angeles, New York, Copenhagen and Milan, where I got a chance to see a variety of techniques and had the opportunity to work with some very talented and passionate people.

Tom Kenny for Vassy via Renderfeed render farm

Render farm helps Director Thomas Kenney (www.flavr.tv) bring his vision to life for Vassy – Could this be love.

Music video director Thomas Kenney (www.flavr.tv) has utilized Renderfeed’s online render farm to create a beautiful dream scape music video for Vassy! Check out the video for Vassy – “Could this be love” HERE on youtube.

With over 80 shots requiring VFX additions, Thomas was presented with the challenge of rendering a massive amount of 3D with a very short time period. With the help of Renderfeed’s render farm Thomas was able to organize, manage, and render a huge amount of CGI.
